The global market for AI applied to sport is valued at several billion dollars in 2025, according to estimates from firms such as Grand View Research, Precedence Research and Fortune Business Insights. Projections point to sustained growth in the coming years, and by the 2030s the figures multiply several times over the starting point, with annual growth rates hovering around 27%. The wide gap between forecasts says a great deal about how speculative the field remains, but the direction is not in dispute. Within that pie, team sports led by football are the segment generating the most revenue.
The sporting side is what shows up in press conferences, though its logic is also money. Even FIFA has boarded the efficiency train with semi-automated offside. Between 10 and 16 cameras track 29 points on each player's body at 50 frames per second, and the connected ball sends impact data at 500 hertz. The result is a decision in seconds and fewer stoppages — equally an improvement to the spectacle and a way of protecting the television product that broadcasters pay for.

Streaming platforms that have adopted these automated systems report notable growth in digital revenues and views. The goal becomes a clip and the clip becomes a subscription.
At the top of the stack, advertising turns elastic. Computer vision audits in real time how many seconds and with what clarity a logo appears on a shirt or a board, putting an exact figure on the sponsor's return. Virtual insertion allows the same match to be broadcast with different LED hoardings by region, selling the same square metre of advertising to several advertisers at once. One space, many owners. The wide market ranges reveal that nobody knows where this ends and that there is smoke mixed in with the signal. Zone7's 72% accuracy means it is wrong almost three times out of ten, and a signing can still fail even if a language model blessed it. AI reduces uncertainty; it does not abolish it. Whoever buys it expecting certainty will buy disappointment.
What is interesting is that the margin no longer lies in paying more for the star player, but in not wasting what you already have — not an empty seat, not a wage in the medical room, not a goal left unclipped. The club that once won by buying now wins by fine-tuning. And when competitive advantage is measured in frames per second and variables per match, the scout with a notebook begins to look a lot like the footballer the machine preferred not to deploy.
