A ball you have to charge 90 minutes before kick-off

LaLiga unveils the Puma Stellar Nitro, a chipped ball that automates offside calls. The technology is real; the logic behind it is treasury, not refereeing.

Fourteen grams. That is the weight of the electronic module suspended at the exact centre of the Puma Stellar Nitro, the ball LaLiga is preparing for its next technological leap and which today, 12 August, was placed on a stage at the employers' association headquarters. Fourteen grams of accelerometer, gyroscope and an ultra-wideband transmitter firing 560 signals per second. A chip no footballer will feel when they strike it and which, nonetheless, will decide who was offside when the striker's boot meets leather. A ball that, before it rolls, must be charged like a phone.

The story being told is one of the end of human error in offside calls. The one that actually matters is different. LaLiga did not buy technology to get more calls right. It bought technology because getting the calls right on plays that repeat every matchday is cost-effective — and for that same reason it refused to pay to get right the ones that almost never happen. The decision is not a refereeing one. It is a treasury one.

The figure that explains everything lies in a comparison the employers' association itself acknowledges. According to reporting by Mundo Deportivo and AS, LaLiga once rejected Hawk-Eye, goal-line technology, because of the steep annual licence FIFA demanded. A million-euro outlay to resolve ghost goals that occur next to never — a handful per decade if you're lucky. It didn't add up. And yet the same organisation is now rolling out a deployment that, adding infrastructure and balls together, runs to comparable figures. The difference is in the return. Automated offside intervenes in several contentious plays per matchday. The ghost goal almost never does. Same bill, far more Monday-morning arguments saved.

It is worth looking at the breakdown the same sources handle, because it dismantles the idea that this is only about the ball. Adapting each top-flight stadium costs several hundreds of thousands of euros, according to estimates reported by the Spanish press. That covers a ring of twelve UWB antennas per ground — three behind each goal and three on each touchline — plus dedicated fibre optic cabling and local processing servers. Multiplied across the twenty stadiums in the division, the total runs into several millions. On top of that comes the optical camera network: between ten and twelve per venue, reading up to 29 anatomical points on each player — another major line item across the competition as a whole. The ball, the star of the announcement, is almost the rounding error in the budget.

Almost, because the rounding error has a price too. A conventional high-competition ball sells for upwards of one hundred euros. Fitting it with Kinexon's capsule and the elastic membrane framework that keeps it floating at the geometric centre multiplies the unit cost several times over, according to published estimates. And one ball is not enough. The protocol approved by RFEF and LaLiga requires several verified and operational balls per match. Across 380 fixtures in a season, the annual supply runs to a six-figure sum, with further spending on inductive charging cases, calibration and technical staff. All so no ball goes flat at sixty minutes.

Because that is the new servitude of the trade. The sensor has no external connectors — to preserve the cover's waterproofing — so it charges by induction, resting on a docking station. Ninety minutes for a full charge that gives several hours of autonomy. The Match Director must verify hours before kick-off that every ball is ready. A twenty-first-century kit man who no longer pumps, but plugs in. And if something fails — if an antenna drops out or the graphics overlay crashes — the match does not stop. The VOR room alerts the referee and reverts to the old semi-automatic offside, the very system this gadget was meant to retire. The emergency fallback is the technology this system declares obsolete.

What changes technically is worth understanding, because there lies the sales argument. Until now, with semi-automatic offside, a video operator had to manually select the exact frame in which the passer's boot touched the ball. The famous frame-picking. When a tangle of legs obscured the view, that selection was a judgement call, not a measurement. The ball's inertial measurement unit, sampling hundreds of readings per second, detects the acceleration spike of the impact and stamps a timestamp that admits no argument. The software cross-references that moment with player positions and reconstructs the offside in three dimensions without anyone deciding anything. The signal travels with precision of a few centimetres and minimal latency. The example cited by sources is the Atlético–Barcelona match at the Metropolitano, where the crowd of players prevented cameras from fixing the moment of the pass and a manual trace had to be drawn. Exactly the scenario the chip promises to close.

The counterargument is honest and must be put on the table. All of this eliminates uncertainty about the moment of contact, which is real and was a genuine source of controversy. But it does not touch the other half of the problem — the one that truly burns in the dugouts. Where the line is drawn, which pixel of the shoulder counts, whether the arm scores or not, whether ten centimetres of knee ahead of a defender deserves to rule out a perfectly good goal. The connected ball provides a perfect timestamp for a decision whose criteria remain human and debatable. Surgical precision in the service of a rule many consider badly written. The clock is refined; the law is not.

And there remains the plan's most uncomfortable crack. The second division is left out of this first phase, and the reason the employers' association gives is cost. Translated: the same offside will be judged with millimetre physical evidence one tier up and with visual estimation one tier below, where promotion, relegation and television millions are also at stake. Objectivity, for now, is priced in euros. The ball knows exactly when it was kicked. What it still does not know is which division it plays in.
